  •  Selected at the age of 18 for the U-21 national team as well as the senior national team in the same year, 2009.

Biography

Onella debuted for the senior national team at the tender age of 18 years. Onella’s interest in netball started in her secondary school days, representing San Juan North Secondary. The national selectors quickly recognised her talent and she immediately gained selection on the U-16 National team in 2004. This was just the start of good things to come for the Laventille youth.

Five years later, Jack earned selection on the U-21 and the senior national teams. She describes it as her best moment in her netball career thus far, and feels that it was the year she really started to mature as a player. Onella’s athleticism has no doubt made her very conspicuous on the court. She plays with great vigour, determination and character, and it is not surprising that she was selected for the national senior team.

Jack’s netballing exploits have so far taken her to a number of countries around the world. The first stop was the Cook Islands, near New Zealand, for the World Netball U-21 Championship in 2009. Trinidad and Tobago placed tenth in the tournament out of 20 countries. Cook Islands was the beginning of Onella’s international career. The following year she participated in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India, and, though Trinidad and Tobago did not place very high in the tournament, the experience would have done her well for the future.

In 2011, Onella was on the road once again to the Asian continent, this time to Singapore for the World Netball Championship. She played with great determination in this tournament to put the red, white and black of Trinidad and Tobago in the top echelons of netball once again. However, Trinidad and Tobago could only manage eighth spot out of 23 teams participating.

Jack was selected for the tri-series tournament, staged in South Africa, in 2013, which involved Trinidad and Tobago, England and the hosts. The “Calypso Girls” did not perform up to par on this tour, losing both their matches.

She participated in The Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2014, in which year she won for the first time the COURTS All Sectors MVP award; and was on the senior national team at the Netball World Cup in 2015. Again in 2019 she was selected on the senior national team that played in the Netball World Cup in Liverpool, England where her performance was excellent.

She revels playing for her club Fire in the COURTS All Sectors Netball League and fought hard to have her team to win the league again in 2019.

She was selected, most deservedly and amidst loud applause, for the second time, as the Most Valuable Player in the COURTS All Sectors Netball League for Season 2019.

DATE OF BIRTH: 15/04/1990
HOMETOWN: EMBACADERE, SAN FERNANDO
DISCIPLINE: NETBALL
POSITIONS: GD, WD, C, WA
HEIGHT: 5’9

Playing Netball began at the Primary School Level, where I learnt the basic skills needed and knowledge for the game. Playing competitively at San Fernando Netball League (SFNL) with my primary school team I developed my skills further. Not quitting, I went on to San Fernando Government Secondary where I quickly acquainted myself with the team and played there throughout my Secondary School years. Soon after leaving Secondary School in 2007, I joined Ambassadors Netball Club and continued playing in the San Fernando Netball League up to 2008. While playing in the SFNL League, I was recognised by the University of Trinidad and Tobago’s Head Coach Ms. Bridget Adams. Thereafter, I was called to trials for a Scholarship to join the team, and was successful.

Being a part of the UTT Netball Club means that I have to attend school, training and national trials and must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0. In 2009 while on Scholarship at the UTT, I was selected on the U-21 national squad that represented Trinidad and Tobago at the World Youth Netball Championships in Cook Islands. Without looking back, I went on trials for the National Senior Team to which I also got selected, and I am still a member.

In the year 2010, I played in St. Lucia at the AFNA/WNC Qualifiers, and played against Canada, Barbados, USA, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Trinidad and Tobago placed 1st in the Championship. The Trinidad and Tobago team then qualified to participate in the World Netball Championship in Singapore. Later on in 2010, I participated in Commonwealth Games in India and played against Countries such as Australia, Malawi, Cook Islands, etc.

In preparation for Singapore, I had the opportunity to play against Jamaica and South Africa. During the WNC, I played against teams such as Malawi, Wales, New Zealand and Fiji.

I continue to play as a member of the University of Trinidad and Tobago Netball Club. Since my introduction to the Courts All Sectors Netball League in January 2008, that same year I was awarded best defending player in Alternative X Division. The next year I was promoted to the Championship Division and following year the Premiership Division. I have since made the All Star Team on three (3) occasions namely 2010, 2011 and 2012. In 2012, I was not only selected on the Courts All Sectors Netball League All Star Team but was also named the Most Valuable Player of the League. I am thankful to the ASNL for providing me with high quality competition, which assisted with my development and playing career.
